THE GHOST IS SLEEPING (but the Whitefish ain’t)

Ghost Reservoir is a gorgeous lake located in the shadows of the Rocky Mountains. Located just 35 minutes from Calgary the Ghost is the perfect place for wind surfing, sailing and ice racing due to the almost constant wind that whips down the valley.

The reservoir also offers tremendous challenge for anglers. There’s Lake Trout, Brown Trout, Cutthroat Trout and Whitefish but the lake can be extremely difficult to fish due to the wicked winds and the abundance of forage fish for predator species to munch on.

Scott & Alex lucked into a couple of fabulous days on the lake, the wind never got above a whisper and the Whitefish were eager to bite.

LET’S GET GOING!

Ghost Lake has an excellent boat launch that will accommodate just about any size water craft. Scott & Alex get the big Lund in the water and head off down the lake hoping that the weather continues to cooperate and that the Whitefish are ready for a little foreign table fare.

OKAY AL, WHAT’S GONNA WORK?

Alex has been angling Whitefish most of his life and has developed a few techniques that are extremely effective. A fly and maggot combo with a light rod, light line, and a bit of weight will usually do the trick. Scott on the other hand, has only caught Whitey’s in the Bow River and was all ears as Alex explained what’s gonna work. As it turns out, Alex caught and released over two dozen fish the first day while Scott missed all but a couple. With a new technique on the brain, and a night to toss and turn thinking about it, Scott was all set to redeem himself on day 2

SCHOOL IS IN

Fall is a time of plenty and as this photo shows Whitefish school up and cruise shallow water areas prior to spawning. Makes for some great underwater footage and an awesome day of angling.

ANY TIME NOW SCOTT

"This job gets a little boring when you’re not catching fish Scott, so quit farting around and set the hook!" Fishing Alberta Production Manager / Videographer Vincent (Vinny) Wasch waits patiently for Scott to hook a whitefish.

I THINK I GOT IT!

"OK, Alex said to set the hook as soon as I feel ANYTHING". Looks like Scott got the hang of it here as he sets the hook on another wily whitefish. After a summer filled with Walleye fishing it took Scott a day to get the hang of setting the hook right away instead of waiting for the fish to take the bait as you would for a Walleye. Once he got the hang of it there was non-stop Whitefish action for Scotty!

CAN WE BREAK FOR LUNCH?

Whitefish are excellent table fair and anglers targeting whitefish for a fresh fish dinner help to take some of the pressure off other less prolific fish species in Alberta. We do however suggest that you cook your fish before consumption.

LOT’S TO GO AROUND

The fall Whitefish bite can be incredible and Alex & Scott lucked into one of those days. Here’s a few shots of some double headers and a couple of nice Rockies. To see exactly how the trip went tune into the new season of Fishing Alberta in February of 2003.
