AROUND CALGARY

In response to repeated requests from dedicated viewers Alex takes a tour of a few of his favorite fishing holes in and around the Calgary area.  From Arctic Grayling and Whitefish, to Pike and Brook Trout; it's a multi-species road trip all within easy driving of Cow-town.

Clean Water and Good Fishing

This inner city lake provides a large portion of Calgary's drinking water and is host to a variety of species including Pike, Whitefish, Brown Trout, Perch and Rainbow Trout.

Park At The Park

North Glenmore Park is only one of several places you can access the reservoir, but it does offer lots of convenient parking, picnic tables and washroom facilities.

Don't Hook Into That

There's no motors allowed on the reservoir but there's still lots of action on the water.  Alex set-up close to the Glenmore Rowing Center so he could watch the teams practice as he waited for a bite.

Nothing Fancy, Just What Works

With big Northerns and large Trout cruising the waters of the reservoir, spoons are a good choice for a lure.

Bow River (Fish Creek Park)

In The Heart Of The City

Not many cities can boast world-class fishing right in the center of town, but Calgary can.  The Bow River offers opportunities for spectacular Brown and Rainbow Trout  without leaving the city limits.

Well... You'd Expect To Find Fish There.

With a name like 'Fish Creek', you'd expect there might be some good spots to drop a line.  The Bow River is accessible throughout the city, but Fish Creek Park offers some of the best water, natural surroundings, and easy parking.

White On!

Rocky Mountain Whitefish are also common on the Bow.  Alex hooked up with this beauty after only three casts.

Carburn Park Pond

Perch In The Pond

Carburn Park is a handy little fishery right in Calgary's south-east. The pond has a resident population of Perch that offers hours of angling fun for all ages.

Equal Opportunity Casting

Efforts have been made to make Carburn Park Pond wheelchair accessible, so everybody can enjoy angling at this location.

Working On That Technique

With the park located right in the city, and having easy walk-up access, it's an ideal spot to take kids for a few hours of fishing.  This little guy was  having a blast just trying to cast his line out.  Imagine the fun he'll have when he actually hooks something.

Here's What Works

Alex takes a few minutes to show the old fly-and-maggot technique, which is the favorite method for getting the Perch to bite at Carburn Park.

Dewitt's Pond

More Than Meets The Eye

O.K. at first glance it doesn't look like much more than an over-grown dug-out, but Dewitt's Pond is actually a very popular and prolific fishery.  SRD stocks this put-and-take pond several time a year with Rainbow Trout.  See our stocking lists to have a look at the 2001 numbers.

It's A Family Affair

Christian Bilou and daughter Kaja cast a few lines into Dewitt's Pond.  The pond seems to be a favorite spot for Father/Daughter and Father/Son teams to spend a little 'quality time'.

Rat in The Water

The pond also has a healthy population of Muskrats. While they do make the footing along the shoreline somewhat treacherous in places with their tunnels, they are amusing to watch  between bites.

Dinner And A Show

Everybody knows that the best time to catch Rainbows is when they're rising early in the morning, or right at sunset.  With Dewitt's you can be treated to a spectacular prairie sunset as you catch your evening meal.

Alta-View Trout Farm

Open For Business

Alta-View Trout Farms is privately owned operation located just north of Innasfail.  Anglers pay for their catch on a per-inch basis, and since this is a commercial operation, are required to follow some unusual rules (see the Regs and Directions for a list ).

So... What's Working Today?

Alex is greeted by owner/operator Doug Smith at the Farm's Office.  Doug asks that all anglers register for the day before heading out on to the property.  While you check-in he's always happy to give you a few pointers on what's getting the bites.

They're In There!

Alex takes a cast into one of the many ponds that the farm keeps well stocked with Rainbow and Brook Trout.  Specimens as large as 15 pounds have been caught, and there have been rumors of sightings of even larger fish.

That Didn't Take Long

Alex had just dipped his line into a fresh pond and he hooked up with this big Brookie.

And There's Another

On the very next cast Alex, taking advantage of an undercut bank, pulled out another prime Brook Trout.  When they're in there this thick, it's tough to keep them off your line

Wedge Pond

Exotic Fish Close To Home

Wedge Pond is only one of several waterbodies in the Kananaskis area that SRD stocks with Arctic Grayling.  This gives Calgary and area residents a chance to try-out these scrappy little fish without having to travel very far from home.  For more information about SRD's Artic Grayling stocking program check out our story on the Quarry Pond Grayling Egg Take.

Strapping In

While most people fish the pond from shore Alex choose to take along the WaterSkeeter pontoon boat.  These little craft are ideal for a location like Wedge Pond.

Alpine Angling

When you've got scenery this good to enjoy you don't mind if it takes a while to get a bite.

Got One!

Alex shows off a Grayling that he landed with a Kast Master jigging spoon.  Grayling are generally aggressive fish, and are real fighters when you get them on the line, which make them a very popular sportfish.
