Pike On The Fly

Alex arrives at Fish Tales Fly shop to meet the guide.

Seamus takes a few minutes to tie a few flies for the day.

We arrive at what looks to be a slough in the middle of nowhere

The boys head down to the water

Going to need pliers perhaps?

With jaw spreaders in place, removing the hooks is a breeze.

Notice where the fish is being held, with a glove you can safely hold the fish here and it will stop struggling while you remove the hooks with minimal pressure on the fish.

During the past few years I've been approached several times about filming more shows about fly fishing and I've had an overwhelming amount of requests to profile Pike on the Fly. Although this sounded exciting, I do have to admit at first I was a little hesitant, as I am fairly new to the whole game of casting flies, and didn't know how I was going to handle the  big monster flies required to catch Northern Pike.

With that said, I began researching the possibilities and found several knowledgeable anglers who were very willing to share some info as to what gear I would need and what flies were necessary.  They all emphasized how careful I would have to be casting these behemoth flies AND recommended, practicing  the double haul. They warned me I could pierce an ear, or worse… “Wear a hat while practicing” one angler recommended.  Great, now I had to learn the double haul, and risk self inflicted injuries by flying hooks. Oh well what’s life without a little challenge?  Besides, the thought of nailing pike on the fly raised my enthusiasm for pursuing one of my favorite species to a whole new level

To see how I did, and if I pierced any ears, tune in to our first episode of the new season on A-Channel at 11:00 am March 21st, 2004 as I head out with Seamus Toner of Fish Tales Fly Shop to tackle some Northerns on the fly

If you want more info on what gear to use or you just need to pick up a few flies, stop in and say hi to the boys at Fish Tales Fly shop. They’ve got everything you could possibly need for all your fly fishing adventures, and would be more than happy to help you out with info, or to swap a few stories.
