Red Deer River BrownsWhen you think of Brown Trout in Alberta, first thoughts always go to the world famous Bow River or the North Raven River commonly referred to as Stauffer Creek. Not to often do anglers even think of the Red Deer River as a Brown Trout destination. The Red Deer is more well known for it’s huge Walleyes, Northern Pike, Sauger and the annual run of Goldeye. Although these species are prominent in the lower portion, the upper stretch that runs from Dickson Dam and continues through to downtown Red Deer is a clear running river with the perfect habitat for a vibrant Brown Trout population. It may not have the numbers that the Bow has, but the quality of the fish is very impressive.
A few years back I met Vinnie Herron from Blue Herron Adventures and he invited us to come take a drift with him on this beautiful stretch of the Red Deer River. He was very excited in the fact that he knew this river was very underrated and that he was going to be able to show us some magnificent Browns. Now there was no guarantee we were going to catch them as we found out how difficult these Browns can be in this ultra clear situation. To add to the fun he had us casting hoppers to individual fish, which proved challenging to say the least.
To find out more check out this exciting episode as we try our luck at hopper fishing for Browns. Check our schedule for airdates and times. If you want to plan a trip to the Red Deer River, be sure to give Vinnie a call. Whether you want to book a drift with him, have him arrange a shuttle for your vehicle or simply need to get some advice he is always willing to help.
