Ice fishing season is here, and anglers all over Alberta anxious to get out and enjoy another great hard water season. Admittedly I 'm one of them, the only thing I never liked about it was having to sit on a cold seat eating half frozen sandwiches.

Last year I got a call from Darin Hubscher and he told me about a great new ice-fishing gadget he called the Sportsman Multi-heater. He told me it was a heated seat that cooked a meal while it kept your buns warm "if you know what I mean". I thought this I've got to see, so he sent us a couple of these units to try.

At first it just looked like your typical 5 gallon bucket with a padded seat, but after careful examination I noticed it had a compartment inside that held a fuel canister and had a cooking surface directly above it. This part of the unit sits down inside the bucket that is wrapped with Camo covered space age insulation which helps hold the heat in.

I was intrigued and couldn't wait to give it a try on my next trip out ice fishing. Well the time came to head out ice fishing, so I prepped some food that I wrapped in foil the night before as my wife watched on wondering what in the heck I was doing wrapping uncooked food the night before an ice fishing trip.

That morning we arrived at our destination and my fishing partners for the day watched on as I pulled out my Sportsman Multi-heater and proceeded to light the fuel canister and place my mystery packages of foil on the cooking surface. I then carried on my regular ice fishing activities while sitting on the new multi-heater. I was amazed at the difference it made on my comfort level and I wasn't even in a heated shack.

The real kicker came at lunch time, as I watched my friends all pull out their frozen sandwiches I snuck into my bucket where my lunch had been cooking and keeping me warm for the past 4 hours. I unwrapped my packages to expose a well-cooked potatoe and onion dish, and a couple of deer sausages. My buddies all looked on with envy as I sat back all toasty warm and enjoyed this delicious hot lunch. All thanks to this great new invention called the Sportsman Multi-heater. Now I wouldn't dream of going Ice-fishing without it, and I can't wait to see what else I can cook in this oven on the ice. Hmmm perhaps fresh fish!!
